Swim lessons in Colington, NC

Colington is an island on the sound side, so the water around a child there is canal, marsh and broad sound rather than ocean.

The water here

An island of canals, marsh and open sound

Colington is reached by a road that crosses the water, and once you are on it the water is everywhere: the canal system of Colington Harbour, the marsh that fringes the island, and the wide sound beyond.

There is no ocean beach on Colington, so the water a child meets is calmer and shallower than the surf across the sound. That does not make it harmless. Marsh edges and canals drop away quickly, and a dock is only a short step from deeper water.

Getting an island child water-safe before the season

On Colington the water is what a child sees first: the canal system off Colington Harbour, the marsh that fringes the island, and the wide sound past the bridge. What swim lessons near me means on the island is a child who can hold a float until an adult reaches them, and that skill is not learned in the canal. Lessons run in a pool where the depth and the temperature hold steady, and what a child brings back to the island is the float. Send your child's age and Sarah will answer.

The program page explains what a Colington child learns first, and the lesson request form is the way to ask about dates.

The program

How ISR lessons work

Whichever town you come from, a Little Fins OBX lesson follows the same ISR structure.

ISR instruction splits by what a child can physically do. A baby from 6 to 12 months learns the rollback-to-float: rolling from face-down onto their back, floating, resting and breathing, and holding that float until someone reaches them.

A child from 1 to 6 years learns swim-float-swim: swimming with their face in the water, rolling onto their back to float and breathe, then turning back over and swimming again, repeating the sequence until they reach the wall, the steps or the shoreline.

ISR describes a typical session as four to six weeks, five days a week, up to ten minutes a day. Lessons are one-on-one. Once a child is ready, they practise in clothes, because most real-world falls into water happen fully clothed.

These figures describe the ISR program. They are ISR's published structure, not Little Fins OBX's own claims.

Questions from Colington

Colington questions

Colington has no ocean beach. Do children here still need swim lessons?
Canal, marsh and sound water is still water, and a child on Colington can reach it from a dock or a garden. The float learned in lessons is what buys time in all three.
Is canal water on Colington deep enough to worry about?
Depth changes fast along a canal wall and around a dock, and that is the part that matters. Lessons teach a child to roll to a float and hold it, whether the water underneath is shallow or not.
Can a child learn to swim without ever practising in the ocean?
Yes. The program teaches floating and moving through water in a pool, and those are the skills a Colington child uses in the canals and the sound. Ocean water can be added later, with an adult, when a child is ready.
