The water here

A harbour town built on the sound

Manteo's waterfront opens onto Shallowbag Bay, with docks, boats and a shoreline that moves with the tide. Around the town the water is the Roanoke Sound, and marsh gathers at the edges where the land falls away.

There is no ocean beach in Manteo itself, so a child here meets dock water, harbour water and sound. That water is calmer than the surf on the beaches, but a harbour is still water, and a dock gives a small child a direct route into it.

Lessons near Manteo

Preparing a Manteo child for harbour water

There is no ocean beach in Manteo, so the water a child here meets first is the harbour at Shallowbag Bay and the Roanoke Sound beyond the docks, both of which move with the tide. Swim lessons near me means something particular on Roanoke Island: water at a dock rather than at a beach, and a float that holds in it. Teaching happens in a pool where the water is steady, and Sarah confirms which pool when she offers a place. Ask her what is open.

The swim lesson questions page covers what a session costs and how it is arranged, and the lesson request form reaches Sarah directly for Manteo families.

The program

How ISR lessons work

Whichever town you come from, a Little Fins OBX lesson follows the same ISR structure.

ISR instruction splits by what a child can physically do. A baby from 6 to 12 months learns the rollback-to-float: rolling from face-down onto their back, floating, resting and breathing, and holding that float until someone reaches them.

A child from 1 to 6 years learns swim-float-swim: swimming with their face in the water, rolling onto their back to float and breathe, then turning back over and swimming again, repeating the sequence until they reach the wall, the steps or the shoreline.

ISR describes a typical session as four to six weeks, five days a week, up to ten minutes a day. Lessons are one-on-one. Once a child is ready, they practise in clothes, because most real-world falls into water happen fully clothed.

These figures describe the ISR program. They are ISR's published structure, not Little Fins OBX's own claims.

Questions from Manteo

Manteo questions

Manteo is on the sound. What water does a child here actually meet?
Dock water, the harbour at Shallowbag Bay and the open Roanoke Sound, plus the marsh edges around the island. Lessons teach the float a child needs in all of them.
Is harbour water in Manteo safe to learn in?
A harbour is calm but it is not a pool: it moves with the tide and it is deep beside the docks. A child learns to float in controlled water first, then carries that skill to the harbour.
Do Manteo children come to lessons on the beach side of the sound?
Families come from across Roanoke Island and the towns around it, Sarah will explain what a lesson involves before you commit to anything.
